ORISKANY — Voters approved Oriskany Central School District’s proposed $13 million capital improvements project Tuesday, which includes a new bus garage in the first phase of construction.

A total of 79 cast their ballots, with 53 voting in favor and 26 against.

Building condition surveys were completed last year, along with an update to the school district’s Capital Facilities Plan in 2020-21. MARCH Associates Architects & Planners, PC, of Utica, met with teachers in May, and meetings with the district’s fiscal advisors also happened that month. The scope of the work was finalized in October.

According to the project overview, the $13 million project is to receive 81.7% state aid funding and be at no additional cost to the local taxpayers. Work will be included for both educational buildings: N. A. Walbran Elementary and the Junior/Senior High School, as well as the district office site to include a new transportation facility/bus garage.

Improvements at the high school include: Replacing windows in original building; replacing classroom ceilings and lights; replacing classroom doors and hardware; renovating cafeteria/kitchen suite; renovating/reimagining library; replacing boilers; classroom ventilation upgrades; adding air conditioning to auditorium; upgrading electrical distribution system; and upgrading phone/Public Announcement system.

Improvements at the elementary school include: Renovating original 1960 gym locker rooms; replacing classroom and corridor ceilings and lights; replacing classroom doors and hardware; creating a Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics Classroom/Maker Space; replacing main entrance aluminum doors; replacing hot water storage tank; updating heating/air conditioning control system; upgradinh electrical distribution system; upgrading phone/PA system; and classroom ventilation upgrades.

Phase 1 of the project, to include the Transportation Center/Bus Garage, will go out to bid in July of next year, officials had said, with construction beginning in August and commencing through June 2023.

District officials said the $13 million capital project addresses highest-priority infrastructure needs at both school buildings; space renovations address outdated and underutilized student areas; and the new transportation facility addresses inadequacies, such as undersized bus bays, at the current Main Street building.
